I’ve never actually caught up with someone in the bookies and asked them what they’re planning on betting on, only for them to grab my arm and say “I really have to get this patent on, right now!”. From that I can perhaps deduce that it’s not a bet that the average punter does on a day to day basis. However, it’s of course an option and where you have three selections that you’re ‘reasonably’ confident of, it’s certainly not a bad option to go for.

Essentially a patent involves picking three bets, but unlike a treble, it’s a combination / multiple bet. So not only are you betting on the treble, but also every other combination (namely three single bets and three doubles). This way if you’re ‘almost’ right you might well make a few quid via some a few of the individual bets coming up and if all three of the selections win you’re in line for a very nice win indeed. Patents are a nice bet for those who like the idea of a big win, but aren’t necessarily going ‘all in’ with it. If you like a few pounds back as a result of being ‘thereabouts’, a patent might well be the bet for you!

Lincoln City versus Chester

Both sides have excellent defensive records, with the Imps keeping 11 clean sheets and the Seals eight in 20 respective home and away matches this season. However, Lincoln have failed to score just twice at home and Chester have failed to score just four times away, so odds of 10/11 with Sky Bet look worth chancing.

Macclesfield Town versus Maidstone United

The Silkmen have scored in 14, and conceded in 15, of their 20 home matches this season, while the Stones have scored in 13, and conceded in 16, of their away matches, so 4/6 with Sky Bet looks fair enough.

Tranmere Rovers versus Forest Green Rovers

Second placed Tranmere have kept nine clean sheets in 20 home matches and failed to score just three times so, with third placed Forest Green having failed to score in just one of their 20 away matches so far this season, 4/6 with Sky Bet will do nicely for our midweek treble.

In the Betway Handicap (2.10) at Southwell on Tuesday, Big Amigo has yet to win off a mark in the seventies, but is 3-4 over course and distance and recorded a career-best effort when winning by 2½ lengths over course and distance two weeks ago. A 5lb rise in the weights makes life more difficult, but he’s 9lb better off for the neck he beat Treaty Of Rome over course and distance in January and can clock up another win under Silvestre De Sousa.

The Sunbets.co.uk Handicap (4.20) is a trappy little contest, with three of the five runners – one of whom is also making his seasonal reappearance – making their Fibresand debut and the other two taking a significant rise in class. On balance, Bold Prediction, who’s just 2lb higher in the weights than when winning at Lingfield over a year ago and has been running well on Polytrack in recent months, looks the safest play.
