How to adopt the psychology of a winning sports bettor

If you are happy betting on sports for fun, and enjoying the wins that you have, there is nothing wrong with that. But what happens if you want to take betting more seriously and become a regular winner. One of the most important things to remember is that a long term successful sports bettor has a completely different mindset to someone who bets casually for fun. If you want to change your betting regime then you have to be prepared to work at it.

After you have finished reading this article you should understand more about how the mind of a successful sports bettor works. You should also have an idea of what you need to do if you want to make the change from a casual bettor to one that actually makes money from the activity on a regular basis and knows how to manage risk and losses in the right way.

The importance of discipline

If you are going to become successful at sports betting one of the most important things you need to have is discipline. If you think about it this is no different to the discipline you need to have if you are working or running a business. An example of having discipline while betting on sports is that you should never chase a bet. If you place a bet on a game and you lose then it’s not a good idea to double your bet on the next game just to try and recoup your loses. This is the easiest way to get into a pattern of losses from which it can be difficult to come back.

Developing a system

In the introduction to this article we explained how you need to be prepared to work hard to be successful. You need to spend time studying and tracking data and statistics. Once you start to do this you can develop your own systems to follow. You can look for patterns that seem to indicate a better win percentage and use these to develop your system. Once you have a system in place it’s important that you follow it; this is all part of being disciplined.

Thinking like a bookmaker instead of a bettor

It can be hard to start thinking in a different way to the way you are used to. If you want to be a winning sports bettor you need to do just that; you need to look at things from the bookmaker’s point of view. You may see a bet that looks too good to be true and quite often that is the case. You should never be suckered in by a bookmaker’s trap. Quite often successful bettors veer away from what the crowd is doing. If you want to know more about betting and how to be successful, this site covers everything. ‘Deadly’ Double, Wednesday, October 12

‘Deadly’ Double, Wednesday, October 12 In the 3.50 at Nottingham on Wednesday, Royal Rebel has already had a fine season, but his most recent effort at Pontefract nine days ago suggested his current handicap mark is hardly prohibitive and he can resume winning ways. He failed by three-quarters of a length to overhaul Blair House over a mile at the West Yorkshire track and, stepped back up to an extended mile and a quarter, off the same handicap mark, must have bright prospects of making amends.

In the 4.55 at Nottingham, recent winning form is something of a rarity, but Aprovado returned to something approaching his best on the Tapeta surface at Newcastle last month and still looks feasibly weighted, despite a 3lb rise in the weights. The Approve gelding had previously been in decent form over 6 furlongs on turf and is 3-5 under Connor Beasley, including twice on the prevailing good going.

Selections: Nottingham 3.50 Royal Rebel, Nottingham 4.55 Aprovado, 1-point Win Double

‘Prudent’ Patent, Saturday, October 8

‘Prudent’ Patent, Saturday, October 8 In the 2.35 at York on Saturday, Great Order is 5lb higher in the weights than when failing by a short head to overhaul Huntlaw, over a mile, at Newmarket last time, but the step back up to a mile and a quarter appears to be in his favour and he can make an impact, even in this higher grade. The Distorted Humour colt remains unexposed over middle distances.

In the 3.45 at York, Hoof It is only 1lb higher in the weights than when third in the Ayr Gold Cup three weeks ago and can gain consolation. The Monsieur Bond gelding was well backed when beating Related and 26 other rivals in the Sprint Stakes at Goodwood on his penultimate start and proved that effort was no fluke with another solid effort at Ayr. He’s won a couple of times over course and distance and is well drawn, in stall 20, to give it another good go.

In the 4.10 at Newmarket, Nakeeta is winless in five starts this season but, frankly, has done very little wrong and deserves a change of luck. She has no stamina doubts, appears to act on any ground and looks reasonably handicapped, so could represent a shade of value at rewarding odds.

Selections: York 2.35 Great Order, York 3.45 Hoof It, Newmarket 4.10 Nakeeta (3 x 1-point Win Singles, 3 x 1-point Win Doubles, 1 x 1-point Win Treble)
